It’s time again for the Photo of the Month competition! Every month we hold a competition with a different theme that gives you the chance to win £100 in Photoion course vouchers. The competition is open to everyone.
This month’s topic will be Self-Portrait.
Self Portraits can be some of the most intimate and powerful images you will capture as a photographer, but they can also be the most daunting. As photographers, we are so used to living our lives behind the lens that it can be difficult to step in front of it.
Here are a few tips to help you take the best images possible:
– Experiment with different lighting styles to help showcase your personality. If you’re more serious and to-the-point, try a darker environment with simple and to-the-point lighting. If you consider yourself to be more fun and quirky, try and reflect that through your choice of lighting, colours and vibrancy.
– Explore different composition / framing: close-up headshots to focus on your expression, or wider angle to allow your body language to tell the story of who you are.
– Use a tripod and timer to ensure you get the crispest image possible. But don’t be bound by that – experiment with capturing your image handheld in a mirror or other reflective surfaces such as a window or water.
